Seven ways to make treadmill running less boring

With lockdown restrictions and social distancing, running on the treadmill is a good option during the coronavirus pandemic. If you’re lucky enough to have your own machine it’s a great way to stay fit while remaining at home, but it’s far less inspiring than jogging in the great outdoors.

Here are some ways you can make your time on the treadmill more fun:

1. Don’t stick to the same pace for your entire run. Mix it up with intervals of higher intensity running and you’ll find the time passes far more quickly (and it’ll boost your fitness too).
2. Try skipping. Skip for 30 seconds, run for 30 seconds, and repeat. You might feel a bit silly at first, but it’s surprisingly fun.
3. Stop looking at the monitor. You might find convering the screen of your treadmill improves the experience.
4. Swap music for an audiobook or podcast. There are so many great titles to enjoy and many find them more beneficial for helping you manage a longer stint on the treadmill.
5. Don’t worry about the numbers. Try running by feel rather than being glued to the figures on the screen. If you’re unsure, try to match your breathing and effort with how you’d feel on a run outside. You could even try replicating real routes on the treadmill.
6. Find a series you love and only watch it when you’re on the treadmill. You’ll feel inspired to run to catch the next installment.
7. Try an app. If you’re feeling brave, try Zombies, Run! where you run to survive a zombie apocalypse, or try Aaptiv for a more traditional coaching method.
